Barrett Campaign On The Ropes?

With the latest South Carolina gubernatorial campaign filings, images of the Spring political landscape are beginning to form.

Within those images, yet another Republican candidate is fading. Local politicians, operatives and seasoned observers are becoming increasingly “disillusioned” with Congressman Gresham Barrett and his campaign for the Governor’s Office.

Though many like him personally, his candidacy is being dismissed – waved at as one would a fly at a pig pickin’. When asked why this attitude, the most frequent response is that he, Barrett, “has lost touch with the people of South Carolina.” Quite a few answers were saltier, but bore the same sentiment.

Back to the campaign filings, even though Barrett has a nice war chest, his fundraising – like his poll numbers – are beginning to seriously wane. There is no momentum. In fact, Barrett may well have already peaked and is becoming a classic “also ran.”

Barrett’s bad fortune doesn’t translate well for the remaining candidates that may have benefited just a few months ago. The Congressman – as are others – is his own assassin. I’ve been floored by the numbers of people who react with unreserved disgust when certain names are mentioned.

The Spy’s intel was spot on about State Senator Larry Grooms’ departure from the gubernatorial race. From the data and analyses coming in – and getting more prominent each week – it’s beginning to look like South Carolina is going to make history in 2010. And I don’t mean the “You Lie!” or Argentine-like history.

It is also becoming increasingly clear that Gresham Barrett’s campaign will be only a footnote to that history.

  1. I’m surprised he’s going down so fast.

Unfortunately for him, the more Barrett talks and people see and hear him, the more they can tell there’s something just not quite right with him.

He’s got a bit of a “dead fish” look to his eyes. His voice has a flat affect despite what forced attempts he makes to simulate genuine emotion. Overall, he comes off as the “slow learner” though in fact it is probably more likely an emotional disconnect than a below average I.Q.

  4. Barrett just doesn’t have ” it”.
He ignores people, looks straight through them, lies directly to their face, changes his votes, can’t make up his mind but….. he is one of DC’s ” most beautiful people”, right?
    Classic.

  5. Why is he still able to raise money? Luke Byars who worked for Demint has signed on to his staff. I think he’ll still be there come June.

  6. I wonder if Bauer goes down in flames–figuratively this time–whether or not Barrett will benefit from it at all.

People need to read the sign:

    “Don’t feed stray politicians!”

  8. This post is so bogus. I checked out the fundraising filings myself. Barrett raised more than any of the rest of candidates.

This post is a delusional rant.

    • Swing and a miss, Scooter. My point is that the rate of growth in his fundraising is slowing down. I may rant delusionally, but I can read. Do the math.

  9. The only reason Barrett had anything at all coming in was that his huge campaign war chest funded by his vote selling with TARP and other bills while in Congress made it look as if he could win.

He was attempting to leverage the much bigger scale of fund raising in running for Congress into a win based on the relatively huge amount of money he could bring into the governor’s race.

Unfortunately, no matter how much caviar you spread on cow chips, it still taste like cow chips. Barrett is a dud from word go.
