With the Southeast Conference’s South Carolina beating Clemson of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Georgia of the SEC taking down Georgia Tech of the ACC, an interesting question comes to mind.
Neither the Gamecocks nor the Bulldogs were ranked going into Saturday’s games whereas Clemson was #18 and Tech #7 in the BCS standings. Further, the Tigers – tops in the Atlantic Division of the ACC – and Georgia Tech – the Coastal Division winner – will meet next weekend for the conference championship.
Georgia and South Carolina are third and fourth, respectively, in the SEC East.
So, does this mean mid-level Southeast Conference teams are superior to the cream of the ACC crop?
Yes.
Maybe Georgia and South Carolina should play for the ACC title. That game would more likely be a sell-out and would no doubt draw a bigger TV audience.
Then there’s that whole #1 Florida playing #2 Alabama for the SEC title next week with the winner going undefeated and playing for the NATIONAL championship. Of the 12 SEC teams, 10 – TEN – are bowl eligible.
THAT’s what I call a conference!
