Broken

Mark Sanford must resign as Governor of South Carolina.

I have supported Sanford’s policies and his politics. I’ve appreciated what he has tried to do as governor and cheered him on.

But he must resign.

His admitted transgressions are personal, not professional, but as an elected leader, he has been diminished by sins of character.

Neither the state, the office or the Republican Party should have to carry the baggage of a damaged governor.

He is broken. His integrity is shattered. Respect for him is in tatters.

He must resign.

As a man of personal wealth, he does not need the office.

The office does not need him.

I hope for the best for him, his wife, his children and other family and friends.

  2. This is ridiculous…..individuals in public positions have done much worse and had no consequences. Why is Mark different?

    • Were I addressing the indiscretions of other public servants, I would say the same thing. Sanford is now a lightening rod of negative publicity. The state can’t afford more of that on top of high unemployment, lousy schools and budget problems. He has admitted to being untrustworthy. Republicans and conservatives – whom he represented – don’t need a tainted figure in a prominent position.

  3. If you think having a “damaged” Sanford is any worse than having a “Governor Bauer”, then you’re crazy.

  4. Bauer? For goodness sake. Bauer.

Traffic cops pulling guns on him. Rumors of gay weekends. His college aged “g’friends”.

Bauer is a step backwards…so like it or not we are stuck with Sanford

  5. Those who advocate for Sanford’s resignation clearly have not thought through the consequences of a Governor Andre Bauer. Please Mark, stay put.

  6. The affair in itself is no reason to resign. But his political enemies and some church going hypocrites people smell blood and will surely go for the kill. Maybe the First Lady sparked the whole reason for the affair..who knows ?

  7. “Maybe the First Lady sparked the whole reason for the affair”… you’re kidding, right?

Agree with the other poster though, Bauer? Seriously, Bauer? I can tell his mouth is watering at the thought though. Personally, I feel as if Im about to vomit a bit when I think about it.

To Mark: Youre human, overall, a decent guy. let your political aspirations take a back seat to trying to reconcile with your family. Seriously, they should matter more.

  8. Maybe you folks have not taken the time to learn how many great things Andre has done for the people in SC. Can you name 2 things Sanford has done for us? I know the things Andre has done, because I have been one who has benefitted.

  9. If you use taxpayer money for an extra-marital affair, preach family values, condemn others for their lack of values, you must resign post haste, period, full stop.

  10. Please continue to support Gov. Sanford in his goal to remain in office. Nothing, absolutely nothing can compare to this hypocritical political game the GOP is famous for. Family Values? HAHAHA Do as I say not as I do? By the time 2012 rolls around you won’t have a party left. Loving it! PALIN/SANFORD 2012!!

  11. anybody remember David Beasley ? He also had an affair .. I mean..come people.. we are talking about politicians .. Strom Thurmond (rest his soul) ! What counts is what you do in office not happy hour !!!

    • I don’t believe one should have to leave office over a marital affair UNLESS they have been high and mighty about family values, (please listen to Sanford’s campaign message), AND use public funds for extra-marital affairs. The man visited not with his children on Father’s Day, but a mistress. If a man talks if tolerance and fails, that is forgiven, but if his stance is in judging others, he too shall be judged.
