I realize that the Charleston area is a large and complicated and politically diverse demographic. And I know that, depending on how one wants to define “the Charleston area,” there are at least nine (9) South Carolina House Districts therein. But District 114 is Speaker Bobby Harrell’s space – spitting distance from the Charleston Tea Party held on the 15th.
The picture above, taken at that rally, should give Speaker Harrell pause. It seems that folks in the Low Country don’t think Governor Mark Sanford “shirked his responsibilities” as the Speaker has contended. Rather, they seem to appreciate what the Governor is trying to do and don’t consider his actions to be as nefarious as does Harrell and other “republicans” in the state legislature.
Rather than toadying up to Jim Clyburn and other snatch-and-grab politicians, methinks Speaker Harrell, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Hugh Leatherman and a few other fiscal obstructionists should pay more attention to the voters.
In a previous post, “Beverage of Choice,” I said readers should
Take note of what Congressmen and Senators did NOT attend any of the tea parties in their state/district. What “representatives” don’t care what those they “represent” think?
Well, as we saw with Gresham Barrett’s nightmare in Greenville and now Mark Sanford and Jim DeMint’s appearances in Charleston, it’s also about who DID show up and the reception they got.
For Harrell and Barrett, maybe Three Dog Night said it best:
Want some whiskey in your water?
Sugar in your tea?
What’s all these crazy questions they’re askin’ me?
This is the craziest party that could ever be
Don’t turn on the lights ’cause I don’t wanna see
