Sabotage?

Some strange stuff happens in the bizarro world of politics. Electoral twists, “strange bedfellows,” odd results and weird campaigns. Still, it’s a world of human interaction and anything – ANYthing – can happen. Last fall, Hillary Clinton was not just the presumptive democratic nominee, but the president-in-waiting. Now, a junior black senator from Illinois (Hillary’s home state) is the likely nominee and former has-been John McCain may very well be the next commander-in-chief.

It’s democrats who are accused of being racist and elitists – by other democrats (and they’re right!). And on and on and on…. But a thought keeps coming back to The Spy about Hillary’s campaign that would be the oddest of all.

Is Bill Clinton sabotaging his wife’s campaign?

When Bill ran in 1992, his was touted as an extraordinary and ingenious national campaign. Add that the machine worked – and against a sitting president – and Bill becomes a political wunderkind. Still, 16 years after the ’92 election, Bill Clinton is considered one of America’s smartest politicians. The Spy has long believed that Bill was more lucky than good, but let’s stay with the idea that he IS a political mastermind.

How, then, can his “gaffes” on the stump be explained? How are the defections best put in context? How is it that the press, which did Bill long before (and after) Monica Lewinsky, has abandoned promoting America’s First Dysfunctional Family?

For whatever might be said, written, thought or speculated about Bill Clinton, there is one indisputable fact – his ego is monumental. Could it be that he doesn’t want Hillary to become President? Could it be that Uber Politician William Jefferson Clinton is sabotaging his wife’s campaign?

If Hillary were to be elected:

  • Bill becomes First Spouse, diminishing his role as former President
  • He will have much less freedom of movement
  • His business dealings (and money-machine) will be put on hold
  • When her term(s) end, his marketability will be diminished as hers is enhanced (as the first female president)
  • His political opinions and activities will be severely limited
  • He will – by tradition – be obliged to participate in “demeaning” roles as First Spouse
  • His legacy will be tied to hers – more than father-son presidential tandems of the past (Adams and Bush)
  • There would be many opportunities in which Hillary’s decisions might conflict with those of President Bill
  • He would have to submit to others in the Administration rather than commanding them.

Now, there are ways around some of these problems for Bill. Chelsea could be brought in to serve as “First Lady” under the unusual circumstances of a former President being the spouse. Bill might also have authorities on President Hillary’s behalf as an adviser. Still, the fact remains that as a former president, Bill Clinton would be … mmmm … emasculated in a fashion usually reserved for those out of office through electoral coup or Nixonian scandal.

On the surface, it may appear that Bill Clinton is campaigning passionately for his wife’s election. But, when tearing down the history of this man and what his future would be as President Hillary Clinton’s husband, the idea of sabotage isn’t so hard to imagine.
