Positively Negative

Does anyone really believe that Americans don’t like negative campaign ads? Polls indicate the public doesn’t care for them, but, we are consistently told, “they work.”

This is a society that lives on reality shows steeped in negativity. Conflict is what makes things work. Friction is essential. We LOVE negative ads. They’re fun, they’re educational and they aren’t the same old stuff of political fluffery. We can only take so much of “look how wonderful I am.”

It’s the negative ads – the “swiftboating” – that people remember.

How boring would a campaign be without the negatives!
